Q Shelter Project: Shape of Housing Assistance in Queensland

Recent capital investment in the community housing sector along with Commonwealth Government encouragement for this sector to grow requires a housing system that will enable and support this growth. Queensland Shelter aims to investigate how to create this policy environment and will look at the affordable housing sector as a whole along with its intersection with the homelessness sector and the One Social Housing System. This project will investigate the many areas that are involved in this process from scale and size of providers, title issues, portfolio management, rent setting policies and organisation viability to what mechanisms are required to enable vulnerable people to be housed in affordable housing.

As a starting point for this process Queensland Shelter is calling for expressions of interest for a reference group. The reference group will help frame our consultation process and guide Q Shelter’s work in this policy area. To gather all the perspectives involved we are seeking to recruit one representative from each of the following:

•Small Community Housing Organisation
•Medium sized community Housing Organisation
•Large or growth provider
•Transitional housing provider
•Indigenous Community Housing Provider
•Specialist Homelessness Service
•Housing academic.

We encourage organisations across Queensland to be part of this process and will provide a range of mechanisms for regional and remote members to participate. In this reference group we hope to have participants that are able to represent the interests of Seniors, Young People, People with a Disability as well as Asylum Seekers, Migrants and Refugees.

If you are interesting in being a reference group member or would like to discuss this in more detail please contact Noelle Hudson on spo@qshelter.asn.au or on 07 3831 5900 by 20th August 2010.

Gold Coast Homeless Connect

The third annual Gold Coast Homeless Connect event was held on Wednesday last week.

The event was a huge success attracting up to 500 attendees and countless service providers. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with Gold Coast services, obtain health and legal advice, counselling and accommodation referrals, help with I.D., and hairdressing. Special Guest, Normie Rowe of The Playboys stardom dropped by to entertain guests and definitely lifted the atmosphere of the event.

The Homeless Connect Working Party including members of Gold Coast Homelessness Services, Gold Coast City Council, Qld Health, Q Shelter, and the Dept of Communities. Special thanks to all the entertainers and volunteers who gave so generously of their time to make this the most successful Gold Coast Homeless Connect yet, and especially Normie Rowe for his wonderful cameo appearance.
