Queensland Action for Universal Housing Design
In January 2010, the Queensland Government launched a mandatory Sustainability Declaration at the sale of all homes, to raise Queenslanders’ awareness of the benefits of sustainable housing features. It required the seller to declare the features of their home that save water and energy, and enhance access and safety. Queensland Action for Universal Housing Design supported this initiative.
There is an urgent issue we ask you to consider.
In response to complaints from some industry respondents and home sellers, the Queensland Government has removed all access and safety features from the checklist on the new Sustainability Declaration. This is unacceptable and must be put right. That can be achieved provided those people wanting inclusive and socially sustainable communities in Queensland act fast. Failure to act will mean that we can say goodbye to an increase in accessible housing in the private market in Queensland for the foreseeable future.
We ask you to write or email the Minister for Infrastructure and Planning expressing your support for the reinstatement of access and safety features in the Sustainability Declaration checklist.
We have attached a draft letter to the Minister and a proposed Sustainability Declaration which includes a checklist for access and safety features that support universal housing design. We want to make it easy for your organisation and members to sign and send off your letter preferably before 12 March 2010.
It is now or never. Please consider this request, and if in agreement, send an email, fax or letter ASAP. Please also pass this letter on to your colleagues. Here is your chance to make a stand for an inclusive and fair Queensland.
