Call for support from specialist homelessness services for Census

The 2011 Census of Population and Housing will be held on Tuesday August 9. The Department of Communities is working with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to achieve the most accurate account possible for homeless people in the Census. Specialist homelessness services will receive correspondence with detailed information about what to do when a Census collector delivers forms to your property.

ABS Officers are currently conducting preliminary review and may visit your establishment. The officer will be carrying photographic identification and will ask a few questions about capacity, expected occupation around Census time dwelling information and other related information.

Some important points to note about the Census are:

Anonymity is of primary importance to protect safety and security of clients.

The Department of Communities does not disclose address information for domestic violence services to any agency including the ABS.

ABS Officers who visit premises in preparation for the Census are not privy to any information about services.

The same strategy as 2006 (the “Green Sticker” approach) will be used to protect confidential services and clients.
