National Census 2011

Queensland Shelter is committed to monitoring the systems level approach of all state and federal groups. This includes the ABS, scheduled to conduct the next national census in August of this year, 2011. For the next six months, we plan to post informative discussions, articles and resources for the benefit of our stakeholders and the greater public.

Response to the ABS Discussion Paper

On Tuesday 2 August the ABS released a Position Paper on the findings following the release of the Discussion Paper on 31 March and the submission process that followed.

Reminder: tips for the upcoming census

The 2011 Census is drawing near with the count scheduled to take place on Tuesday August 9. With anecdotal reports indicating that every person missed in the count costs area services approximately $4,000 a year in lost funding, encouraging homeless clients to report their street address as None on the census form becomes especially important.  Read more »

A new collection to assist in measuring homelessness in Australia was launched on July 1 by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). Read more »

Call for support from specialist homelessness services for Census

The 2011 Census of Population and Housing will be held on Tuesday August 9. The Department of Communities is working with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to achieve the most accurate account possible for homeless people in the Census. Specialist homelessness services will receive correspondence with detailed information about what to do when a Census collector delivers forms to your property. Read more »

May 24, 2011: Homelessness Australia and ABS sector consultation

Homelessness Australia and the Australian Bureau of Statistics convened a sector wide consultation in Sydney on 24 May to discuss proposed counting the homeless methodology changes which would reduce the number of homeless by almost 40percent in its current iteration. Read more »

ABS methodology consultation feedback

Queensland Shelter policy officers attended last week’s Australian Bureau of Statistics consultation looking at their proposed revised methodology for estimating the homeless population. The ABS says that the revised methodology is more transparent, consistent and repeatable; however, Queensland Shelter holds a number of concerns following the Bureau’s presentation. Read more »

Latest ABS homeless methodology released

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released its latest methodology on counting the homeless.

In a discussion paper released yesterday (attached), the bureau said it had identified an ''apparent overcount'' of the existing homeless population.  Read more »
