Media release 09/12/2011: The more the better: housing peak welcomes expansion of Gladstone’s UDA

State housing peak Queensland Shelter would like to congratulate the Bligh Government in their work with Gladstone’s Urban Development Areas (UDAs).

Affordable housing in Gladstone is set to receive a boost following the announcement of a third Urban Development Area for the city.

The new UDA in Toolooa is set to provide an additional 1200 homes to sustain population growth associated with the LNG boom.

Executive Officer of Queensland Shelter, Adrian Pisarski, is looking forward to the construction of 3000 homes in the Gladstone area following the new UDA.

“The resource boom has put serious pressure on the housing markets of most regional mining centres, and needs to be defused before the communities buckle”.

“Long term, these centres will require large injections of private and government investment to maintain a sustainable affordable housing and rental market”.

“Right now it is a relief to see the State Government address affordable housing in Gladstone- hopefully a sign of long-term commitment to housing in regional centres”.
