Media release 04/10/2011: Queensland wins big in round four of the National Rental Affordability Scheme
Queensland Shelter is delighted that round four of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) will provide more than 5600 properties for Queenslanders.
Round four includes delivery on over 200 projects to build and more than 17, 000 properties nationwide for low to moderate income households to rent below market rate.
The Queensland boost, which will include areas affected by this year’s natural disasters, will take the number of properties supported under the program to 11,200 in the State.
Executive Officer of Queensland Shelter, Adrian Pisarski, said the Bligh Government has shown foresight in allocating NRAS contributions in forward spending.
“It is critical that Government invest in long-term solutions like NRAS to address the housing stress currently being experienced in Queensland and nationwide.
“I encourage the Gillard Government to continue their partnership with Queensland State Government and commit to more NRAS rounds for the future”.
Queensland Shelter also believes the work of affordable housing companies such as Brisbane Housing Company and Horizon Housing Company are to be commended in coordinating the roll out of NRAS properties.
“NRAS is exceeding expectations as an affordable housing solution as well as a sustainable and dependable business model”.
“Queensland’s affordable housing companies are proving that NRAS properties are a sound investment which should be part of institutional investment portfolios”.
The National Rental Affordability Scheme is about increasing supply of new affordable rental housing, reducing rental costs for low and moderate income households and encouraging investment and innovative affordable housing.
