Health, Housing and Disability Forums

Over the past 8 weeks, Queensland Shelter have conducted Health, Housing and Disability forums across Queensland with the aim to provide people with a disability and/ or chronic health issues, as well as service providers an opportunity to share their issues, concerns and experiences on accessing and maintaining housing.    Additionally the forums presented information on recent health, housing and disability initiatives and policy changes across Federal, State and regional areas.

Last week’s forum on the Gold Coast completed the series of six forums. This process started in Cairns, with the other sessions held in Toowoomba, Rockhampton, North Lakes, and Logan.  Over 300 people attended and included people with disabilities and chronic health issues, service providers, housing organisations, family members, carers, advocacy groups, peak organisations, and elected representatives from all levels of government.

Many issues, concerns and experiences across a range of topics were shared and we will feedback this information once it has been analysed.  We invite people who were unable to attend the forums, especially people with a physical disability and those in the rural and remote areas to forward their issues.

Once the information from the forums and other feedback has been analysed, Queensland Shelter will formulate recommendations and policy positions to address these issues and concerns.  These will be included in Queensland Shelter’s policy platform which is currently being reviewed and forms a basis for our advocacy, advice and policy positions to government.
