Welcome

This group commenced meeting at the Loganlea Neighbourhood Centre in 1991, with representatives from seven tenant complexes. At that stage, the self-funded group met monthly.

The idea of setting up a Regional Branch came from visits from three other Regional groups, led by Merrilyn Rowler in Mackay, Lorraine Bonnyman in South West Qld and Fred Morris in North Queensland. Though there was no funding available, these three people visited LANARTA frequently to encourage and assist further development here. These visits were funded by the efforts of their own respective tenant organisations. (And people say the CWA lead the way with raffle fundraising!)

LANARTA incorporated in 1997 and shortly thereafter received annual resource funding from the Department of Housing, as well as funds to run the fledgling Garden Awards. The group eventually outgrew Charles Avenue and moved meetings to the Woodridge Progress Hall, also their venue for the Garden Award Presentation days. During this period, LANARTA applied to become and was accepted as a branch of Queensland Shelter.

Because of its origins the LANARTA Branch has always enjoyed high public housing tenant participation.

There was been considerable growth in Queensland Shelter's branch structure since Lanarta's inception. Lanarta has grown to include the Logan Housing Interagency group encompassing a broad range of providers and support agencies within Logan's extended boundaries.

Branch members include emergency relief and counselling  agencies; CALD services; Pan Pacific support agencies; family, youth and domestic violence supports; churches and charities; SAAP and crisis accommodation; the Departments of Communities and Housing; TAAS; Home Assist Secure:  and Indigenous services.
