February 2008

The Brisbane North Housing solutions network is looking to capitalise on the momentum created at its September 2007 Housing forum by conducting a series of quarterly forums in 2008 addressing a range of issues:

·         Home sharing models (26 March)

·         Land supply and planning issues

·         Innovative( including environmental) design

·         Training and skills development.

The first Home Sharing forum is planned for 26 March 2008 and will examine the advantages and disadvantages of programs for co-housing single men; vacancy registries including share accommodation websites; international student schemes; Departmental co-tenancy policies and pilot programs; seniors initiatives; and house sitting models amongst others.

The network is looking for expressions of interest from other branches that are interested in attending or presenting information on current house sharing models.

Rose Butler and staff from the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre have succeeded in re-housing 30 of 32 people and their families camped at Wiley Park in the Pine Rivers Shire.

The Pine Rivers Council had originally announced that it was closing the shower and toilet facilities at Wiley Park in an attempt to force a tent city of 16 groups to leave. According to Rose Butler, the Council refused to close the park to prevent an influx of additional homeless and allow intervention workers an opportunity to rehouse its occupants when requested. Instead, publicity regarding the announcement only succeeded in doubling the number of residents.

Ms Butler co-ordinated a team of four full-time workers and two volunteers and worked closely with Homelessness Early Intervention staff.  As a result, 30 of the park’s 32 occupants, some of whom have never had housing before, have been housed with the help of Brisbane Housing Company, Churches of Christ Care, and local Realtors.

Ms Butler said that the council is now better informed about dealing with homeless persons, including accessing resources and referrals. Ms Butler and Early Intervention staff continue to support the former Wiley Park residents as they stabilise in housing.
