Branch History
The Mackay Housing Interest Network was established by eight members in 1994. The branch focus was to develop links with local real estates, provide information on local housing issues, give Queensland Shelter representation at regional housing meetings and participate in community education.
The Mackay Housing Interest Network forms the branch meeting in the Mackay region. This group has met bimonthly attracting members from Mackay and Whitsunday with visitors from the hinterland. There have been regular attendees from all the housing agencies in Mackay including TAAS, HAS, CRS, SAAP agencies for single women, families, women's refuges and youth. The Community Housing resource worker, long term housing providers and the Departments of Housing, Health and Communities also attend regularly.
The network was formed to bring people with an interest in housing issues together and supports forums, planning days and projects including:
- Developing accommodation and support service directories
- Supporting the establishment of the Mackay Housing Association
- Providing regional training opportunities, information days and forums
- Advocating for increased housing options in the Mackay region
- Submitting regional responses to the review of government policies and programmes.
The Branch network is drawn from key individuals/organisations across several local government areas surrounding Mackay including, Bowen, Clermont and St Lawrence.
Tenants advice and Advocacy Services (Mackay and Whitsunday), Mackay regional tenants group, Community Rent Scheme, community health staff, disability support service workers, community housing providers, supported accommodation staff, community development workers, and representatives from state government departments, including Housing and Communities regularly attend.
The network has an informal structure with a broad community based membership. Meetings being held every two months in the conference room of the Area Office or at the Mackay community Housing and tenancy Service. Guest speakers are regularly invited to speak on housing related topics.
