Branch History

The Queensland Shelter Women's Housing Network identifies and responds to women's housing issues.  The group is comprised of community sector workers who recognise the importance of:

  • Networking, peer support, and information sharing
  • Advocating for improved women's housing options in Queensland
  • Providing an opportunity to inform policy development and implementation
  • Exploring housing, support, and referral options as a group.

The network is action focussed and initiates projects that  address and raise awareness of women's housing issues.

Projects and activities include:

  • The Domestic Violence research project exploring the use of judicial instruments such as ouster orders and their impact on women's homelessness
  • Putting the Pieces Together. An information tool for working with women seeking housing assistance.  It includes basic information about the housing system, with tips and chicklists for establishing a new home.
  • The Women's Housing Puzzle:  A forum connecting the pieces of Women's Housing Policy
  • Home is Where the Hurt Is.  This factsheet highlights key data relating to women's housing tenure in Brisbane.  It raises issues relating to access, affordability, poverty and family instability.
  • Women's Housing Referral Manual. A comprehensive guide to accommodation options and support services for women in the greater Brisbane area.  This manual is a must for any service providing housing referral information to women and their families.

The Women's Housing Network meets at alternating venues around Brisbane.
